Veryovka Choir. Liturgy for choir and folk singing

The Veryovka National Choir will perform the Third Liturgy for Choir and Folk Singing by Kyrylo Stetsenko.

The composer wrote the Liturgy in 1921 — in the wake of the struggle for the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church. After long bans, the Ukrainian language was heard in churches, and the traditions of Ukrainian spiritual cantos and psalms were revived in the music of divine services. Stetsenko consciously combined the singing of the choir and the faithful in the Liturgy: in his church, the Ukrainian parishioner received the right to his own voice.

For the Veryovka Choir, whose calling card is the combination of academic and folk voices, addressing this work — is an opportunity to rethink its identity in a new way.

Symbolically, the Liturgy will be performed in the space of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra — a national shrine that in the latest struggle for independence has returned to its spiritual sources.
